TV Sound Regulator

My wife has diminished hearing for low sounds, I have the same problem for high frequencies. She might miss hearing distant thunder or soft rain; I won't hear squealing car brakes that set her teeth on edge.

Of course we argue about TV. She's says people mumble; I say she needs a hearing aid. She sometimes turns up the volume so loud that I'll go turn on the TV in the bedroom and put it on mute on the same channel she's watching; I hear it fine from the living room.

Most of the time we can compromise on a volume that slightly annoys both of us: she misses a few words, and I don't quite have a headache. The commercials do tend to be a problem (in spite of the fact that supposedly commercial volume cannot legally be louder than the show), but more often the big blast of sound comes from changing stations. Comcast On-Demand is particularly bad here; she usually has to push the volume up while we watch a movie and when it's over, the sound level jumps to eardrum damaging levels.

I was interested to read about products that claim to solve that problem. There are more than a few advertised; two I found were:

(I think these are exactly the same product - notice the price difference though)

With some trepidation, we decided to try this out. As promised, installation was easy enough and we had no problem. This doesn't seem to interfere with sound quality (but remember: neither of us have uncompromised hearing to start with) and it does seem to smooth out the big blasts of sound. We do find that we have to set the volume higher than we did before, and also that it reaches a point where it just will not go higher. That apparent damping hasn't been a problem yet, and as I said, this seems to work, but I am just left feeling that this has to be a gimmick and that there must be some price being paid for the results.

Well, I just don't know.. it seems to work, but I'm still suspicious. Apparently I'm not alone.
