Note: this is a little advanced for most home users, but the more computer savvy among you may find it useful.
Have you ever turned on your computer and had to wait before you could do whatever it is you wanted to do? Your computer was probably busy loading its "startup" programs - the programs that automatically run when the computer starts.
Aside from viri and adware and security issues, a common source of problems is these startup programs: all the things that load when Windows starts. On modern systems, you can click on "Start", choose "Run", and then type "msconfig" and press Enter. You'll see something like the picture on the left. If you click into the Startup tab, you'll likely see a long list of programs. Those are your "startup" programs. Some of them are immediately identifiable: you probably understand what "Quickbooks Update" is and whether or not you want it (if you are using Quickbooks, you surely do). But what about "igfxtray" and "ccApp" - what are they, and do you need them? Actually these two are common and useful and you probably do want them, but how would you know that? The searchable list at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php can often help you.
You can also do "Start->Run" and type "taskmgr" and click on the "Processes" tab. That will show you things running right now, and that same list can help you identify what they are for.
