I wanted one of these long before anyone made one. I wanted one
even before I first saw a picture slide show on a computer. But
my wants were way ahead of technology, and even when these things first
came out, they were too expensive for me to justify buying one.
Well, that's all changed. Prices have come way down, and you'll see these for sale under $100.00 (though larger and higher quality models still cost more, of course).
These use the same kind of memory cards as most digital cameras use - in fact, you can take the SD card right out of your camera and pop it in to the frame for an instant slide show.
If you have a camera that uses a different kind of memory card, do check to be sure the frame supports your card. However, that wouldn't necessarily prevent you from using it: most of these also have USB connections that let you connect them to your computer. They look like another hard drive as far as your computer knows, and you can just drag and drop pictures from your computer to the frame.
Some models take that even further: these Ceiva Digital Picture Frames can use a phone line to download pictures from the Internet.
I bought a low-end Lasonic model. It comes with a remote control, will accept SD, MMC and MS memory cards, and can even play AVI movies (most cameras and even cell phones can take short movies nowadays). You can set it to display a single picture (change it when you are bored) or loop through a slide show of all your photos. Aside from sitting on your desk, we also discovered another use: my wife can take this when she visits her dad at his nursing home. Set it down on his table, plug it in, and show him what's new back here without the trouble of photo albums, peering into a hard to see camera, or dragging a laptop computer. If we weren't afraid of theft, we could even leave one there and bring new memory cards to swap out when we have new pictures.
I've seen that other folks here at Oak Point have these: they are getting cheap enough that you can afford to have more than one. There are even wall mount models available now.
