The iPod touch is Apple's latest iPod, but really it's much more than that. Because it has built-in WiFi and Safari (Apple's web browser), it's actually an inexpensive (starting at $299.00) computer. For $100.00 more you could get the low end iPhone model instead, which is all of that plus a cell phone and camera.
While for many folks either of these would be all the computer they'd need, you probably do need a "real" computer still - Windows or Macintosh. It's not clear to me yet if you absolutely need another computer to load data on this or if you could do everything over the wireless internet connection, but consider how much you can do: email from Google, Yahoo or anyone else that is browser based, word processing and spreadsheets from docs.google.com, news websites, YouTube, store your pictures (several thousand anyway) and create slide shows, watch movies and music videos, and oh yeah: listen to music. At $299.00, that's pretty impressive.
There are similar products: Nokia's N800 is more money but could theoretically do more because it is Linux based, but I really think Apple has a winner with this one. I expect to see a lot of iPod touch boxes given as gifts later this year.
