So you are buying a new computer and the salesperson says "And of course you want Microsoft Office.."
You think, "Well, yeah, how else would I write a letter or make a spreadsheet? Gotta have Office!"
Well, no, you don't. Not absolutely, anyway. Nowadays there are all sorts of free competitors for Microsoft Office, and some of them are pretty darn good. I'll mention these in passing before I get to what I really want to talk about:
I don't use any of those.
Nope, whether it's a letter, a spreadsheet or a slide show, I use docs.google.com. If you send me a Microsoft Word document, I can upload it to Google and read it there - I don't need Microsoft Word. If I write something, I don't even have to send it to you: I can share any of my Google documents with other people and even let them make changes if I want them to be able to do that.
I can "publish" my documents, which lets anyone see them - it's like having a web site just for that particular document. For example, here's a silly little slide show I'm sharing with the world: http://docs.google.com/Present?docid=ddvm82dw_24dvcdss.
Google Docs isn't as sophisticated as programs you run on your computer, but it has all the basic features and certainly is more than most of us will ever need. It's free, it works, it's available from any browser anywhere - you can leave your computer at home when you travel and still be able to work on your "stuff" on any computer you can beg or borrow.
You might need all the sophisticated bells and whistles that Office or one of the free alternatives provide, but if you don't, Google Docs is as easy as it gets. Nothing to buy, nothing to install: just click the link and that's it.
