User-Friendly Recycling

User-Friendly Recycling, L.L.C,
250 Cape Highway (Rte 44), East Taunton MA 02718
(508) 828-1644 http://www.ufrecycling.com

You might have noticed the sign on Route 44: "$95.00 Computer". I have driven by that many times, but yesterday I took the time to swing in to find out what's behind that.

User-Friendly Recycling is located at the back of the building, and you enter through a single door to a warehouse type operation. Nathan, the young tech who greeted me, explained that they have recently moved from the front of the building and are still unpacking and setting up - the place won't look quite so barebones in a few more days.

I introduced myself, and asked him to explain what they were selling for $95.00. Nathan pulled a few example systems from the shelf and gave me the specs: typically a 700Mhz or better processor, 256MB of RAM, 10 to 20GB hard drive and Windows 2000 as the operating system. That's perfectly fine as a low end computer for casual use (email, web browsing), though I would suggest adding another 256MB of RAM (yes, they'll do that for a small extra charge). They have bulky old CRT monitors for these, or for more money (starting around $95.00) you can get an LCD screen. Nathan said they have a 30 day warranty on these systems.

They offer repairs and upgrades, including scrubbing of viruses and reinstallation of your operating system. Nathan said that reinstallation is usually about $60.00; that's a very reasonable price - I'd charge you twice that and grumble about it the whole time. Their diagnostic fee is a very inexpensive $20.00 - hard to beat that!

They also have parts: memory upgrades, power supplies, lots of hard drives, and of course can install all of these as needed. From time to time they have other less usual items; you can find their web page at http://www.ufrecycling.com.
