Update September 3 2007: Great Chow 18 is now open
Great Chow 18, 497 Bedford St (Route 18) Abington, MA 02351-1927 (781) 871-8832, about 30 minutes from Oak Point
As some of you know, my wife Joan and I moved to Oak Point from Wollaston two years ago. During our forty years in Wollaston, we raised four great kids and met some wonderful people. We involved ourselves in many civic activities; Joan in the public schools and cub scouts, and me in local politics, the cancer crusade, and The Salvation Army. We really enjoyed the community we grew to know so well.
In 1997, I noticed one of the local storefronts being remodeled in Wollaston Center. I watched with great interest as Great Chow - a modern, open-kitchen Chinese restaurant - celebrated their grand opening. Being a lover of Chinese cuisine, it did not take me long to try the restaurant, and discover how spectacular the food was.
For the next ten years, Great Chow became our family's favorite Chinese restaurant; superior to anything we had tried over the years, even in Boston's Chinatown. When you combine the quality of the food, with attentive, friendly service and a lively, modern atmosphere - you have an unforgettable restaurant. One that became an instant hit in Wollaston, and beyond.
It didn't take long for me introduce myself to Great Chow's two owners Andy Kwan and Bill Ma, who have since become dear friends,. They are truly two of the nicest people I know. They quickly became part of the Wollaston community, and we discussed all kinds of things, from our families to food to gardening. In what some might find an unusual arrangement, Andy agreed to set aside his scrap vegetable greens for me to use in my compost pile. This arrangement benefited both of us, as well as the environment!
The reason for this review is this: In about two weeks, Great Chow 18, their newest location on Route 18 in Abington, will be opening. They have made a massive investment in what promises to be one of the largest and most modern Chinese restaurants on the South Shore, with seating for 400 and just as much parking. They will have the ability to host functions both large and small. There is also a lovely cocktail lounge, and they even have free wi-fi!
If you go, please say hi to Sing Lau (the COO and general manager) and Tony Lam, who transferred from Wollaston and is now Great Chow 18's operations manager.

Here are some details and pricing:

--------------------------------
Naturally, I'm writing this gushing review because Andy, Bill (and his wife Pat), Sing and Tony have become dear friends over the years. But if you enjoy Asian food, or are looking for a nice venue for a family party, I hope you consider trying Great Chow 18, and discover for yourself what I have known for many years, that its takes more than simply "great chow" to have a successful restaurant -it takes great people.
Joan and I wish them much success, and will be visiting often.
Norman & Joan Forde
