  • Flat Iron Cafe

    444 Center Street Middleboro Ma 02346 (508) 947-3358

This pie wedge in the center of Middleboro was actually once two buildings. I was told this by the current owner who explained that he had found that when renovating - he said the joining of the two had been a hasty and sloppy job: they actually left the gutters in place behind new walls.

No sign of that now, of course. What you do immediately notice at the Flat Iron is how clean and neat the place is. I commented on that to the owner; he admitted it takes a lot of work and constant attention to keep it that way.

When my wife and I visited, we had the unfortunate luck to have a brand new, obviously green waitress. Pleasant enough, but no matter what question we asked, she didn't have an answer and had to go ask. It was probably the third or fourth time we sent her off on another quest that the owner came over and I found out all about the building.

With all questions answered, we ordered pizza and salad. The salad was clean, crisp but uninspired: mostly iceberg lettuce. A bit disappointing - I forget what they charged for it, but whatever it was, it should have been less. That salad was worth maybe a dollar, no more.

When the pizza came, I was much happier, but my wife was not. This was one of those strange circumstances where she and I totally disagreed. I liked the pizza, she didn't. And I mean she not only didn't like it, but was aghast that I said it was good. "How can you say that?", she asked, perplexed and a bit annoyed. "I like it", I mumbled. I think they put a touch of honey in the sauce and I thought that gave it an unusual and pleasant nuance. Maybe she couldn't taste it, or maybe she could and just didn't like it, I don't know. But we are miles apart on this one.

Well gee, the place looked clean, smelled great, I'd give it another try. I guess we won't get pizza or salad though..

    Sep 24th, 2007:

I just read the post about a mixed review of the Flat Iron. I just had to add my 2 cents. The Flat Iron is a great take in Middleboro center. The owner is almost always on site and runs a very tight ship. My husband and I go there at least twice a week. They serve a great Senior Breakfast for the amazing price of $1.95. On Saturdays, the pizza is half price - another great deal. We've been there for lunch and dinner and ordered a variety of entrees. My favorite is fish & chips (a generous portion of fresh haddock). They don't buy prepared cole slaw or tartar sauce. Each is made on site with their own recipes. The previous post didn't mention the model train on a track surrounding the dining room. Nor did it mention the pictures of downtown Middleboro from long ago. It really is a great take - please give the Flat Iron a try and support a great Middleboro business.

We went last night to hear local Mark Belanger play and sing. We had a veggie pizza - everything was very fresh and wholesom and the half price ceetainly made our bill small! Great crowd, good food, good music!
