Baldie's Pizza & Subs

78 Main Street Lakeville MA (at Starr's Market Rte 105), 20 minutes from Oak Point gate. (508) 947-1055

Linda and I are very fussy about our pizza - we don't like "Greek" style pizza, we don't like "deep dish". For many years our favorite place was the Town Spa in Stoughton, though I think they use too much salt (Linda disagrees but admits they do use more than other places). We both know that you either love or hate the Spa's pizza: very few people are ambivalent about it.

Why am I talking about Town Spa when I'm reviewing Baldie's? We'll get to that in a moment. First, Baldie's is inside a little supermarket at the back. If you missed the small red sign on the outside wall of the store, you might not even know it was there. You could very easily drive right down 105 and never notice this at all. There's another pizza place (Royal Pizza) just before this.. you need to watch for Starr's Market (on your left traveling south on 105 from Middleboro). Baldie's is inside Starr's Market - you go in the market door and walk to the back.

There's limited seating, and they do not serve beer or wine. The place is unusually clean and neat looking, a big plus in our books, so we were already ready to like it at first sight.

We ordered garden salads. Very fresh, very crisp, nicely cut (no monstrous pieces to deal with), very clean. Salads are another strong point in our liking or disliking a pizza house - give us a crummy, wilted bowl of nothing and we are very unhappy. Here at Baldie's, we were very, very happy. Linda asked for Greek dressing, and said that while she still likes Town Spa's dressing better, this was very good. We both thought the salad could have used a little less Iceberg and a little more Romaine, but it was so darn fresh and clean we hate to carp at all.

For pizza, we chose one of our favorites, mushroom and onions. It arrived very quickly, another good scoring point. It was perfectly cooked, a bit thicker than what we are used to at the Spa, but with very obviously fresh toppings. It smelled great, and when we tentatively nibbled at the still too hot tips of our first pieces, we both raised our eyebrows in pleasurable surprise. This is darn good pizza!

We ate the whole 12" pizza ($7.25) and I went up to the counter to talk to the owner (yes, he's bald). I congratulated him on a wonderful pizza and told him he needed a bigger place. He said he once had a bigger store in Bridgewater, but the hectic pace and long hours were more than he wanted: he likes making excellent pizza for shorter hours and fewer customers. He says he's thought about going bigger again, which is when I mentioned the Town Spa.. he knew of it, having once lived near it.

Yeah, I like a beer with my pizza too, but this is so darn good I can live without it. At twenty minutes away, it's close enough to bring it back here (sorry, no delivery). Without question, this is the very best pizza we've had since we moved to Oak Point. I'd say it's better than the Spa, though Linda remains faithful and will only say it's awfully good and steps above anything else we've found.. we like it!

Like the Spa, Baldie's uses a blend of Cheddar and Mozzarella cheese - I'd guess the Spa uses more Cheddar. That gives both their pizza's an unusual taste much different from Greek pizza - as I said, few people are wishy-washy about that - you either flat out love it or hate it. We love it.
