Don't stop now 7/29/2007 Tony Lawrence
Yesterday afternoon voters of Middleboro accepted the agreement that was negotiated between us and the Wampanoag tribe. The Tribe will now continue with the work required to bring a resort casino to our town. They have a lot of work ahead of them, but so does Middleboro, and Oak Point needs to be a part of it.
Less than 30% of registered voters turned out for this Town Meeting. Instead of a crowd of seven to nine thousand from approximately fourteen thousand registered, we had less than four thousand. In many ways that's understandable: add normal voter apathy to the demands of a summer weekend, mix in the unpleasant prospect of the physical challenges an outdoor vote presents, and we were probably lucky to get that much. But what was the turnout at Oak Point? What did we contribute to this?
I'd say we contributed a lot. I don't know how many Oak Pointers found their way to that field yesterday, but I bet it was a much higher percentage than Middleboro as a whole. We might have been five or six hundred strong, and as so many wore the orange "Vote Yes" shirts, we looked like a pumpkin patch growing in the field. Let's be conservative and guess that our contribution to that 2,387 in favor was 500 votes - I think it might have been more, but no matter what, we made a significant and valuable contribution here. Folks, the Oak Point vote was a big part of passing that article yesterday. So congratulate yourselves heartily; you deserve a lot of credit.
But there is much more to be done. There is a Selectman's recall election is coming up shortly, and we need to make sure that intelligence and resourcefulness fills those seats. It's obvious that the Finance Committee needs a big overhaul too, and again Middleboro will need sharp, hard working people.
Oak Point needs to be a part of this. We need to stay active in our town, we need to be watchdogs, mentors and perhaps even participate more directly: why shouldn't Oak Point put one of its own on the Board of Selectmen or the Finance Committee? How about the School Committee?
How much knowledge and experience is sitting here at Oak Point? Since coming here, I've met a lot of very bright people, people who had long careers in various fields, people who have decades of life experience to draw upon, people who really can help guide Middleboro to a better future.
Don't stop now. Yes, a lot of small town politics is boring: dog control violations, insignificant zoning appeals and the like. But there's a lot more to it, and most especially with the opportunities and challenges this Wampanoag Resort will bring, Middleboro needs our collective wisdom.
There are stories behind every one of our grey hairs. Lessons learned, experience gained. We Oak Pointers can be a proud part of Middleboro's future. We've done a lot already, but we can do more.
Don't stop now.
