Pascal's Wager 7/19/2007 Tony Lawrence

Perhaps we have something similar to Pascal's Wager in regard to our vote for the contract on July 28th.

That is, you may may not believe that the proposed Wampanoag Resort is a good thing for Middleboro, but have you considered what we have if they come here over your objection and we have no contract?

Wouldn't it be prudent for someone who objects to vote now in favor of the contract, but then work with Massachusetts and Federal legislators to thwart the deal entirely?

Well, maybe that's too cerebral an argument, and the retort might well be that it's no fun chasing cows after you leave the barn door open. But it is something those of you opposed at least ought to think about:

What do we get if they come anyway and we have no contract?

Answer: the casino you didn't want and perhaps no benefits at all.

Casinofacts.org insists that the Wampanoags won't come if there is strong resistance. Do they know that for a fact? Sure, that might have been said early on, but is that how the Wampanoags feel now? Are you sure? Do you want to bet the farm on it?

Folks here at Oak Point got to hear an excellent presentation last night from Adam Bond and Ted Eayrs. Although they have differing opinions in certain areas, they both agree on this: the Wampanoag Resort Casino is coming with or without our approval. Without a contract, we have no legal recourse that will guarantee us anything at all. There's really nothing left to argue about: we need an agreement with the tribe and the sooner we do it, the better.

I know that some folks here are worried about the difficulties of attending this Town Meeeting. Yes, there are some obstacles involved, and yes, it's even more difficult for those who are older or have health problems. But there will be real efforts made to accomodate people with problems and make this as easy as it possibly can be. I spoke with a volunteer group last night which has purchased a thousand "bag" chairs and will be distributing them to those who need them. Of course that is only a small part of what will be needed, but other groups will be stepping up with their contributions too. Everything possible will be done to try to make you comfortable under the circumstances we face. Discussion will be limited: this will not be a long, drawn out process. You will be able to vote quickly and get back to your life.

This vote may be the most important thing you ever do for or against the future of Middleboro. Please think about it carefully.

See http://www.casinocommittee.com/ for the report of the town's Casino Committee.

Postscript July 20th: I just got off the phone with an "unnamed source" who imparted some information that I can't confirm quite yet but hope to be able to within a few days. If what this source told me is factual (and I have good reason to believe that it is), there's no question that the Wampanoags are coming no matter what the vote is. I'll report more as soon as I can confirm the details.
