Vote Influence 8/7/2007 Tony Lawrence
I thought you all might like to know that we Oak Pointers are still being accused of voting at the whim and demand of Oak Point management.
The anti-casino folks.. wait a second, the anti-casino folks? They are still around? I thought this was all settled and over. Weren't there some grand speeches about burying the hatchet and moving forward together and all that?
Yeah, right. As I was about to say, the anti-casino folks are very busy planning their next moves. Of course they intend to try to influence federal and state legislators, and they should do that: I don't think they can stop this, but it would be foolish of them not to try.
But they (the anti-casino folk) have also joined the recall effort here in Middleboro. They'll tell you that they have reasons unrelated to the casino, and perhaps some really do - the casino deal was just bad tasting icing on a cake they already did not like. But for others, it's nothing but revenge.
And we've become part of what they are worried about. At http://casinofacts.org/discuss/index.php?topic=10.0 JPowell, a leading anti-casino activist (and a leading recall activist also) says:
Let's work to make the Sept. 29th Recall Election successful.
The odds will be difficult to overcome. Mr. Darmon will mobilize Oak Point residents because of his vested interest in the SouthPointe Mall project and required support by the BOS.
Later on in the same thread someone again brings up that "how to vote" paper that Oak Point supposedly drilled into our acquiescent minds after plying us with free food and whisking us away in free buses to vote their way..
I find this insulting, and asked for an apology. Nobody buys my vote with free chicken and a bus ride - or with anything else.
As I told them, I don't know how Oak Point will vote on this recall - I don't even know how I'll vote yet. But I do know that revenge for an outcome you didn't like isn't a good reason to toss people out of office.
I also know that insulting the integrity of a large bloc of voters isn't the smartest move you could make to help people see things your way.
I didn't get the apology, by the way. Maybe it will come after she sees this..
