Not Me! 7/31/2007 Tony Lawrence
OK, it's official: too many people have asked me why I don't run for office in Middleboro. I'm tired of explaining it, so I'm posting it here.
First of all, I'm a certified loony liberal: ACLU contributor, very Libertarian, way out there on the fringe. Very few people could even come close to agreeing with my politics. Middleboro needs someone more in tune with the mainstream of political thought.
Mainstream? If you find the smallest little trickle that runs out of that main stream, and follow it deep into the woods until it disappears into the ground, and then walk 40 miles farther, that's where I am politically. It's very lonely out here.. and worse, every one of the very few people I do meet out here in Loony Liberal Land is obviously completely nuts! I mean really crazy - what's wrong with these people? I'm fine, though, really..
Second: I'm not a money person. I'm a computer geek. If I had any financial acumen at all, our banking and retirement accounts would be a heck of a lot larger than they are. Trust me, you wouldn't want advice from me on managing your money. Better to ask a neighborhood cat. The cat won't tell you anything that causes you to lose a bunch of money, and if she did, you wouldn't listen.. you are safe with the cat.
Finally, I'm not a patient person (ask Linda). Nor am I a good negotiator: I'm more the scream and wave my arms type. I'm sure many of you saw me on TV yelling at an anti-casino person - that's me, I don't get more rational, I just get louder. It's probably my French ancestry. We're emotional.
Middleboro can do far better than me. Personally, I like myself a lot: I have some very nice qualities. None of them would qualify me for public office, though.
So: I appreciate the sentiment, but I'm not running for anything. I said that when I was handing out flyers at the postal center. Two people made an intelligent response: "Good - I wouldn't vote for you!".
They had the right idea, folks.
By the way, I've been told that passing out flyers at the postal center is a no-no at Oak Point. Apparently a couple of people objected loudly; I won't do it again. You also can't post anything on any bulletin boards without pre-approval of the Social Office - just a "f.y.i." that I did not know.
