Up until now, I've had little or no interest in the upcoming Middleborough recall election scheduled for Saturday September 29th. Frankly, I don't like them. With financial mismanagement of Middleborough's affairs originally the main topic of the recall, I felt I didn't have enough knowledge or lived here long enough to know how this town was being run and managed. The recent revelations regarding Wampanoag Tribal Chief Glenn Marshall however has changed all that. The man speaking for and representing the Wampanoag Tribe regarding the proposed Casino has now changed my opinion and seems to have become the number one topic of the recall election. I think we all have some soul searching to do and ask ourselves if the people elected to office in this town were really doing their job while schmoozing with this guy. Why the rush to sign the Casino proposal? A billion dollar get rich scheme presented to the Selectmen on a Friday and signed by all five of them along with Glenn Marshall as Chairperson. We the taxpayers were not allowed to view the agreement until the following Monday evening and then; only if you had a computer.......... Why? http://www.middleborough.com/General/Agreement.pdf On Saturday July 28th, a blistering hot day and about a week after seeing the document for the first time, the 21-page agreement was signed by all five Selectman minutes after the four-hour town meeting vote.............. Why the rush?
Now that we know when and possibly why a recall election is scheduled, I thought it important to know who these candidates are that want to replace three of our five Selectmen. I was informed Wednesday that the Middleboro Gazette is hosting a special forum at the Council on Aging (COA) 588 Plymouth Street September 13th starting at 7PM so that all the candidates can introduce themselves and state their positions on all the various issues facing the Town of Middleborough. Questions from the floor will be allowed. Editor Jane Lopes will moderate the forum.
The three Selectmen that are targeted for recall are holding their own political rally at the Middleboro Lodge of Elks on Thursday September 6th, 2007 on why they should not be recalled.
Please take notice: If you have not been involved in a recall election before and plan to vote, prepare yourself to be thoroughly confused when you see the ballot the town has prepared. I have a sample ballot I picked up yesterday while at the town clerks office and after 24 hours, cannot figure it out (I still have memories of the Infamous Butterfly Florida Ballots in 2000). Hopefully it will be improved it before September 29th.
