Hear No Evil

This borders on the incredible, but unfortunately it's true: Middleboro officials were not allowed to speak at a regional casino task force meeting last night (Thursday). There's a story in the Enterprise at http://enterprise.southofboston.com/articles/2007/10/05/news/news/news14.txt about it today, but I also heard from from Brian Giovanoni (that bright young man who headed up Middleboro's Casino Study Group). Brian had this to report:

The Town of Middleborough was shunned (for lack of a better word) by the communities participating in the Regional Task Force.

If the shunning was not enough, a police office was called in just in case someone needed to be removed from the room (not me). Many of the people, including reporters, in the room thought that this was extremely poor treatment of Ruth. The group discussed the possible acceptance of Middleborough into the Task Force earlier than planned because "they were not going to be able to have the police officer there for very much longer" and wanted to get it out of the way.

The group discussed it and the Town of Middleborough was not even allowed to state their case as to why we should belong to the group (besides being a community). Selectman Yates felt that having the Town of Middleborough on the Task Force would be counter productive to their group.

We found that the role of this task force is to stop the casino from coming to Middleborough, not investigate impacts and find solutions which is what I thought their goal was.

"Ruth" is our Town Planner, Ruth E. Geoffroy.
