Character 7/16/2007 Tony Lawrence

This sign was on Plain Street today. It says "Tribe=Bribe - Our road is ruined - Want to ruin our town?? - Like Traffic??". We assume they think Plain Street was "ruined" because it was paved as part of the Oak Point development.

Some anti-casino folks are worried about changing the character of Middleboro. No doubt some of them were also anti Oak Point - they probably worried that we'd clog up Plain Street and Rte 105 with traffic. Well, that didn't happen, and fears of a resort casino doing the same thing are just as silly.

The character of Middleboro is going to change with or without the Wampanoag resort, but only one of those choices has any chance of making Middleboro a better place. Without this project (and please remember, this is going to be a world-class resort, not just a bunch of ugly slot machines in a run-down tin shack), what do we have to look forward to? More deficits, less fire and police support, more cuts in the schools? Gee, that's great "character", isn't it?

Of course a lot of that doesn't really affect us here in Oak Point, does it? We're a self sufficient island, right? We don't need police and fire and ambulance services.. oh wait, that's right, we do need those things, don't we? And if you don't think that poorly educated children can affect your future and your kid's futures, you just haven't read enough history.

Yes, the resort may bring us some problems: that's why our Selectmen and our lawyers have been working hard to identify and mitigate all negative impacts. Obviously they feel that the positive impacts more than make up for any issues they have investigated. But when it's all said and done, and there is a major resort destination nestled in the Precinct Street woods, just how is that going to change our "character"? My wife and I will still eat breakfast at Dave's Diner once or twice a week. We'll still buy our groceries at Hannaford's - so what's changed? A little more traffic? Maybe, but with the road improvements planned we may actually be better off after than we were before. Crime? Our own police chief says that won't happen. So what is it? Is gambling such a cursed vice that it must be kept out of Middleboro? Oops, too late: we already have Keno and lottery tickets.

This upcoming vote may be the most important thing you ever do for or against the future of Middleboro. Please think about it carefully.
