The Big Vote 7/17/2007 Tony Lawrence

Linda and I attended the July 16th Selectman's meeting last night. Part of the meeting was with the person who has been offered the Town Managers position (negotiations still under way); he seems to be a very bright and "can do" guy. One Selectman (Steven Spartaro) doesn't seem to like this candidate, but all the rest see him as their best choice.

With regard to the big vote coming up on July 28th, yes it will be outside. The Selectmen wanted to at least have some air-conditioned seating available for the health impaired, but the Town Moderator informed them that would be impossible because of the way it was originally posted in the newspaper. Roger Brunelle, the IT head, also said having part of this inside would make security more difficult.

There will be tents. There will be water, and they hope to have juice available also. THERE WILL NOT BE CHAIRS. As you won't be able to park anywhere near the meeting (there will be buses and shuttles from designated parking areas), bringing chairs will of course be difficult.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM. Initially we all thought that there'd be a rush to get there and that people would start arriving at 7:00 AM to get "good seats", but as there are no seats, and it's all outside under tents, there's probably no great urgency. I don't know if Oak Point is planning buses, but that's probably a good bet.

The Selectman expressed the hope that the Town Moderator will limit discussion sharply. After all, by now everyone should be well aware of the pros and cons, and the only unknown is the actual contract. That should be available soon, and the intention is to include a synopsis with the soon to be sent mailing that will explain parking, registration, security and everything else residents need to know about this historic meeting. Therefore, the hope is that we can move to a vote quickly, long before anyone passes out from heat stroke.

Remember, you can watch these meetings on Comcast channel 8, 7:00 PM on Mondays.
