  • Where am I?

New homeowners at Oak Point often don't know much about the roads that connect us with the rest of the world. You could look at a map, but some people just can't process maps very well, and that's especially true when you are new to the area. My poor wife was confused for months, often calling me after a successful trip down to the Galleria Mall asking "Do I go North or South on Route 24 to come back?"

You'd go North. The Galleria is South and West of us.

Even I was slightly confused by Route 106. As we came here from Sharon, I knew it had to somehow end up in Mansfield, but I was pretty vague about how it actually accomplishes that. I was a bit surprised to look at a map and see that it actually parallels Route 44 for quite a bit of its length before it bends northward. Route 106 West is a way to Route 24 if Route 44 and 495 are clogged. Of course that means it's also a way home from Route 24.

I also knew that Route 28 had to get to Brockton, but I had no clue where the southerly direction would take me. It parallels Route 495 toward the Cape. Route 18 South and Route 140 South both head toward New Bedford, while Route 18 North is a very reasonable route up toward South Weymouth.

When Plain Street is finished (soon?) we'll all be annoying the folks who live there by driving past their homes on our way out to Plymouth Street (turn left for Route 44). They don't want us using "their" road - we "ruined" it by putting pavement over the lovely dirt ruts they found so endearing and now we'll add insult to injury by actually using it.

Ah, well, soon enough you'll know your way around. You'll learn the Wood Street shortcut to Hannaford's, to duck down Old Center Street when you want to go to Dave's Diner, and the mysterious roads off Route 105. You'll never be a "townie", but at least you won't get lost.

    Welcome to Oak Point!
