"Guess what time it is?"
I had just crawled back into bed. Linda was snoring gently into her pillow. I had been up since 4:30, but it was now 6:00 AM. I shook her shoulder gently. "Hey, guess what time it is?"
"I don't want to guess." She turned her head into the pillow.
Hmmm. I have specific instructions from the night before to get her up at 6:00. She wants us to go to a yard sale on Summer Street (go right on Plain Street till end - left is Plymouth, right is Summer). We've arranged to meet friends there at 8:00 this morning. She needs to get up.
"Who's a pretty girl?" Sometimes I like to pretend she's a parrot. "Who's a pretty girl? Come on, who's a pretty girl?"
She's not amused, and clamps the pillow tight around her ears. She says something. It's muffled, and probably was "Go away you cruel and inhumane beast" but I chose to interpret it as "Good morning darling, please help me wake up more fully".
Most mornings I let her sleep. I'm almost always up early, but she seldom if ever sleeps well, so if she can grab an extra hour in the morning, I'm all for it. But I know she really wants to go to this yard sale. I try again:
"Time to make the do-nuts.."
When I'm not pretending she's a parrot, I pretend she works at Dunkin Donuts. She's still not amused, but turns her head toward me and opens her eyes slightly. "What time is it?"
"It's six oh eight". I smile and kiss her.
She moans lightly. "Wake me up at seven."
No, that won't do. We'd never get to the yard sale by eight. She has closed her eyes again.
"There's a flying saucer in the yard." No response.
I kiss her again. "It's six oh nine", I inform her.
Her eyes open. "I have to get up", she says, but seems a little unsure.
"Yes, you do. Who's a pretty girl?"
"The yard sale." Her eyes are now wide open. "I have to get up!"
And she does. So do I.
