Quilt Documentation Day at Town Hall

As part of Middleboro's 340th Anniversary Heritage Festival, quilt owners from throughout Southeastern Massachusetts will have a special opportunity to learn about their quilts when MassQuilts hosts a Documentation Day on Nov. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Middleboro Town Hall, 10 Nickerson Ave.

Quilts will be measured, photographed, examined, and documented by the MassQuilts team, assisted by knowledgeable volunteers. They will analyze and record information including date of work, fabrics, patterns, and condition. A detailed history of information pertaining to the quilt will be recorded. Participants are encouraged to bring any photographs, documents, or other materials relevant to the quilt maker and the quilt.

All quilts, quilt tops, quilt blocks, quilted clothing, and unfinished pieces made up to and including 1950 are welcome to the project. Participants will receive a record of the documented information, including a photograph of the piece, plus information on care and storage of their quilted work.

The Massachusetts Quilt Documentation Project aims at producing educational materials, exhibitions, and public programs providing information about the rich history of quilts. Ninety-four historical societies and hundreds of private owners have been served since the project’s beginning in 1994.

Those who wish to have a quilt documented should call Judy Donahue at (508) 947-3794 to schedule an appointment. A $10 contribution per quilt is requested to help defray the cost of the documentation materials. Other questions about the MassQuilt Documentation Project may be directed to quilt documentation coordinator Jill Hall at (508) 947-4134.
