What's in a Name?

By Praiseworthy Horselover Winner

One of our daughter's friends is fretting over what to name her second child. Naming children is pretty important stuff - today's parents are very serious about this, often going to great lengths to find just the right name. Just today I heard an interview with the author of The Baby Name Wizard, which promises to help narrow choices by providing data on popularity, origins and more.

By the way, Moon Unit Zappa turns 40 this month. Just thought you'd like to know.

You can do a lot of name research on line. For example, http://www.thenamemachine.com/ tracks popularity over the last 120 years or so, and gives a little data on meaning and origin, though http://www.behindthename.com has more on origin, and http://www.zelo.com/firstnames/ has more on meaning (I do have to wonder if they just make some of this stuff up).

I used a number of sources to decide what my name must mean. "Anthony" seems to be "Worthy of Praise" and sometimes "Priceless" (there must be a MasterCard joke in there somewhere), while "Philip" seems to be a lover (or at least a close friend) of horses, and "Lawrence" comes from the laurel crown awarded to the winners of sporting events.. needless to say, I have not lived up to my names very well.

My wife is "The Pretty one from the Sea of Bitterness Winner", or at least she is since marrying me.. I can't find any meaning for her maiden name ("Sbardella"), though it probably means Price is No Object in some ancient dialect.

We named our daughters "The kind speaking one who is like God" and "Purity" for no good reasons that we can remember. Finally, my mother's name translates as "Rules the Home", which she certainly did.

Buying books to help you name your child: $10.36 at Amazon.com. Saddling your offspring with names carrying obscure meanings that may take them years to discover: priceless.
