As nearly all Oak Point folks know, there are presently three exits you can take from Route 495 to get here: exit 6 at Route 44, exit 5 at Route 18, and exit 4 at Route 105. Normally you wouldn't take the 105 exit unless you needed to stop by Hannaford's or the Post Office on your way home, though it is a good way to avoid the rotary during peak traffic.
During the first few weeks and months we were here, both my wife and I managed to drive right by the 105 exit several times. That's annoying: it's a pretty good haul to exit 3 where you can turn around to come back.
Now sure, we all zee out now and then, but we did this too many times. Old age, I thought, pretty soon we'll be sitting on the porch eating flowers and wondering why everyone is so darn nice to us. But that wasn't it: yes, we are total flakes now and then, but the State of Massachusetts gave us some help with this one.
As you come down Route 495 and pass exit 5, there are three signs that advertise upcoming exits and destinations. The first sign is accurate, and so is the third.. but the second one is quite the trickster. It says that 105 is 2 miles away. Unfortunately, it isn't: the exit is actually about three quarters of a mile from that sign.
So here you are, still not completely familiar with where things are in relation to other things, and you see that sign. Unconsciously, you relax, there's plenty of time, your exit is still two miles away. A quarter mile later is sign three, which says exit 4 is just 1/2 mile away, but you don't look at that: you have two miles to go.. and you sail on by.
So neither of us is quite ready for the rocking chair yet, though maybe somebody in charge of signs on Route 495 is.
