We needed to reupholster an antique Queen Anne sofa that belonged to Tony's grandparents and I was having a terrible time finding the fabric I wanted. Everything I liked was $60 to $120 a yard or more, and of course we'd have labor on top of that. I also had two chairs I wanted done at the same time, so the cost was spiraling upward.

I've been searching up and down the South Shore but just recently stumbled upon Shawmut Upholstery. This is a small, family run organization - very nice people. Sonny Jr. and his Dad have been doing upholstering for several decades - I think they said since the early sixties. They do offer in home service to choose fabric, and of course do pick up and deliver your furniture. I watched Sonny Junior and other family members working on pieces while I was there and was very impressed by the quality of their work and attention to detail. Their estimate of labor was attractive also. I decided to use them to do the actual work, but unfortunately could not find the exact fabric I wanted, so they referred me to Craig Textiles in Rockland, another long standing business (since 1945).

Craig Textiles has a large showroom with many books of designer fabrics as well as samples of their upholstery work displayed throughout the store. As luck would have it, Craig Textiles is having a fantastic sale of ALL in-stock fabrics at just $1.00 per yard beginning this Thursday, September 13th (2007) through Saturday. I was able to buy forty one yards of in-stock, heavy duty fabric (it will outlast me!) for just $43.05 with tax. At that price, I was able to add more fabric for another chair! This sale is a rare opportunity, with plenty of unusual and high quality fabrics to choose from - not only that, but they were nice enough to give me the sale price today (Tuesday).

(9/25/2007) We got the couch back last night - beautiful job, such perfect attention to detail: Shawmut Upholstery really does great work! Here's a picture of the finished piece.
