Misaligned Garage Door August 2, 2007 Tony Lawrence

Our garage door wasn't closing right, but I had a secret weapon: some months ago one of my neighbors (Steve Levesque) happened to mention that he had 12 years experience installing these things back when he was much younger. Of course the technology has changed a bit (he told me that the remote openers used to be the size of a car battery or larger), but I figured he'd know more about it than I would, so I begged for help.

Well, I was right. He watched me open and close it a few times and spotted the problem right away. Even better, he fixed it in less than twenty seconds. Pay attention now, because this can happen to you.

See that big black spring in the photo to the left? That's attached to a wheel that runs along a track, and if you look closely, you'll see a thinner wire that runs through that wheel and another one closer to the front of the garage. Pause for a moment, and take notice of all the stuff I have piled up on the wire shelf on the wall. Before we noticed the door not closing correctly, we had quite a bit more stuffed up there, and that was the actual cause of our problem.

Simply put, I put too much junk on the shelf and in the process managed to knock that wire off the wheel. Easy to do, and probably would have been easy to spot too if, again, it weren't for all the stuff I had jammed up there.

So: watch out for those wires. Steve also told me that it's a good idea to spray the track and the hinges etc. with silicone spray - it helps the door move more easily and also keeps the noise down a bit.

If you have a small garage door problem, Steve might be able to help. He won't charge a lot, and with 12 years experience, probably knows a bit more than most of us in this area..
