Oh, Deer

Sometimes some of our more citified friends will ask if we ever see deer down here in Oak Point.

OK, all the Oak Pointers can stop laughing. Some of these people have never seen a deer in their life, and they know we are in "the country", but on the other hand, we're in a big over 55 housing development, so do we ever see deer?

Oh dear yes.

Not only do we see deer, but we share our gardens with them. I have to spray "Liquid Fence" on our plants. This stuff is suppose to repel deer and rabbits - it sure repels me when the wind blows some of it back on me. I looked at the ingredients; the main one is "putrescent egg solids".. doesn't that sound yummy?

We see deer almost every day. They pass through the woods in back of our house, and they aren't always quiet about it. Unfortunately, we've had deer hit by cars here too; I don't think they are stupid, but they probably just can't imagine how something as big as a car could be traveling that fast. That's probably where that "frozen like a deer in the headlights" comes from - they are probably just completely amazed.

So yeah, we see deer. Lots of deer. If you are driving around here in the evening or early morning, it's smart to slow down.. way down. And if you like your gardens, you will have to protect them, especially in the winter when food is scarce. Bundle up those evergreens in burlap or spray them with repellent.. or maybe both.

Do we see deer? You betcha.
