Some of us have Coleman furnaces. The gas company techs refer to these in disparaging terms, but we've had no trouble with ours so far - well, until this year.
Randomly, we wouldn't get heat. The fan would blow, but it would never fire off. Unfortunately, when we called someone to look at it, it worked perfectly.
That tech did look at a few things, but couldn't see anything wrong. He said it was silly to just start replacing things, but did show me that the unit has a diagnostic light on it. You can see the green LED in the upper right of the picture at left. That's behind a metal cover that comes off with one screw. That cover has warnings about electrical hazards and all that, but it also has the diagnostic codes: if that green light is blinking three times in a row, for example, that indicates that the "Combustion Air Switch Failed to Close". That's what was keeping my furnace from working.
If you feel comfortable removing that cover, you can see the light. Don't do this if you aren't used to working around electrical stuff!
It would have been easier if the diagnostic light were visible from outside, but knowing what the problem is does help. I could probably go buy the Combustion Air Switch myself, but I'm a klutz, so I'll hire someone to do it.
