Last night we had one of those end of driveway conversations - you know, you were driving by, you see someone you know, you stop and talk, and next thing you know it's getting dark..
Anyway, one of the things that came up was that these people have a litter of kittens under their shed and they are pretty sure that Momma belongs to one of their neighbors, though they haven't had a chance to find out for sure yet. They will check into that, and if nothing comes of it, they'll contact the Oak Point "PAWS" Pet Club to see if they can help.
The problem, of course, is that unparented kittens like this can be a neighborhood nuisance, are likely snacks for coy dogs, and if not adopted, will probably lead short, miserable lives as feral cats. Unless you are deliberately breeding, female cats should be spayed and male cats should be neutered for the sake of their offspring if for no other reason.
If you haven't done that, and don't want kittens under your neighbor's shed, you need to keep your cats indoors, especially when they are "in heat". How do you know when they are in heat? Well, if your female cat is putting on lipstick, that's a good sign, but you'll find more reliable advice at How To Tell if Your Female Cat is in Heat.
I couldn't find any advice on what to do if your male cat is putting on lipstick. I'd say just leave him be, or suggest that you may have made an earlier classification error, but again, un-neutered male cats just add to the problem and can be less than pleasant to have around the house anyway.
Of course all of this is true for dogs also, though few Oak Pointers would ignore our leash laws and let their dogs run loose.
Let's not have Oak Point be a coyote cafeteria or a source of feral cats. Be responsible about your pets.
