I'm sure we must have some experienced construction types here at Oak Point. Maybe one of them can answer the question that's bothered me since we moved here: what the heck are all these boxes for and why do some of us have more than others?
Take my house, for example. We only have one aboveground box (shown here on the left) with two underground thingies. I know one of the underground boxes is where Verizon brought in FIOS to my house, but what's the other one for? And what's the taller green thing, and why is it aboveground while the others are below? And the white pipe? What's that for?
Then there's this grouping of five boxes on Pheasant Lane (right).
Five boxes? What could they be for? Let's see, there's one for phone, and one for electricity, maybe one for cable.. but what the heck are the other two?
What about this lonely type (this one on the left is on Pheasant Lane but there are a few others scattered around Oak Point). It almost looks like a Fedex drop off box, doesn't it? I'm pretty sure it isn't, but what the heck is it? If a snowplow clips it off some dark night, what do people on Pheasant Lane lose?
Well, whatever they are, people do seem to have different attitudes toward them. At some homes, they are hidden behind barricades of evergreens. Other folks just plant a few pretty flowers and still others just let them be whatever they are. This one on Pheasant Lane (right) is guarded by wooden mallards.
If you know the function and reasons for all these things, drop me a line. I'm sure I'm not the only curious Oak Point homeowner.
I'm told by someone who stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night that the bigger boxes all have to do with electrical transmission - some are transformers, others are switches. The small, tall green boxes are Verizon. Some of the underground stuff is also electrical, and some is Comcast. He wasn't sure what the "Fedex" boxes are, but thought they might have to do with the sewage pumps.
Here's a more definitive answer:
In your first picture...from left to right...the grey hand hole is a Verizon box, the small green pedestal is Comcast splice ped. in your second picture....the first cabinet is a site lighting control cabinet for the street lights...the second is a Verizon splice pedestal....the third is a Comcast express splice cabinet and the fourth is a Middleboro Electric transformer and finally a Middleboro electric sectionalizer cabinet. The third picture is a Verizon main line hook up cabinet and the final picture, with the wooden mallards, is Verizon splice ped, Middleboro Electric transformer, and Middleboro Electric sectionalizer cabinet. Hope this helps ....Bob Cove, Saxon Partners.
