Advice for Oak Point Walkers

I love to walk through Oak Point before breakfast. I come from Lantern Lane, head out Pheasant to Fox Run and then return by Oak Point Drive because I like the challenge of the steep climb before it crosses Pheasant and I turn back toward home. The whole trip takes about an hour; it's a very pleasant walk.

Sometimes I will meet someone walking the other direction. If I happen to see them again on my return trip, I know that they are lost. One obviously confused man admitted that he was trying to find the Dunkin Donuts!

There is no Dunkin Donuts at Oak Point. We do have a monthly Coffee and Donuts with Neighbors; that's better than any donut shop because it's a 100% senior discount, you don't need to tip anyone, and there are more chairs. It's also easier to find.. for most of us, anyway.

Because I see so many other Oak Pointers walking, I know that some of you who read this may be walkers also. I have something very important to tell you: don't leave the community!

No, it's not because you don't have your gate clicker with you and won't be able to get back in. There's plenty enough traffic, you could just wait patiently for someone to return home. Or, if you are still flexible enough, you could limbo under the gate.

My wife suggested walking AROUND the gate. Duh - that would be against policy!

The reason you should never leave the community on foot has to do with danger to your life and limb. I have been out on Plain Street in the safety of my car and have seen very frightened squirrels high-tailing it back to Oak Point. Obviously something scared them and while you might argue that squirrels scare rather easily, I would like to point out that squirrels also become alarmed by real threats: large men with shotguns, rampaging bears, cackling witches and lurking ogres, for example. You may pooh-pooh my fears, but I'd rather stick to Oak Point roads and be safe.

One more piece of advice: wave at all passing vehicles. Sometimes the sun will be in your eyes or will be glaring off the vehicle's windshield and you won't know if this is some visiting contractor or a fellow Oak Pointer, so it is better to be safe than risk offending someone who will subsequently make a U-Turn and, maddened by your snub, return to run you into the ground.

Not that I would do that.
