The importance of exercise 7/9/2007 Tony Lawrence

"I'm too old to exercise"

"I'll never get rid of this fat, so why bother?"

None of that's true. Sure, there are some people who are too sick to exercise, and there are morbidly obese people who need medical help beyond simple diet and exercise, but most of us have nothing to lose (except weight!) and everything to gain from increasing our physical activity.

Oak Point has a very nice gym with really nice equipment - lots of treadmills, stationary bikes and the like. There are also very easy to use machines for weight resistance training, which is something that can be very important to do as we get older.

Oak Point is also a wonderful place for walking. The quiet streets with plenty of up and down hills are ideal for a relaxing stroll or an invigorating hike. I often walk from my home on Lantern Lane to the post office buiding to pick up my mail - it takes about an hour round trip and saves a little gas and wear and tear on the car. I also go out for shorter walks when I feel stressed or bored - walking is something almost everyone can do and it offers real health benefits.

We also have three swimming pools here. I don't swim, but doctors do often recommend this as low impact, very beneficial exercise. Just don't swim alone: accidents do happen and we wouldn't want to lose you.

You aren't too old, and you will feel better. Work a little exercise into your week and you'll be happier, healthier, and maybe even drop a few pounds.
