Book Review 7/12/2007 Tony Lawrence
The Tender Bar by J.R. Moehringer
I had a hard time with this. Apparently a lot of folks loved it; I'm just not one of them. The author is a decent writer and I enjoyed most of his art, but every now and then I winced at things he surely thought were oh so clever but simply were not. The title itself is just one example: tender bar, bar tender, get it? Oh my..
The intertwined thread is a neighborhood bar and the author's interactions with the men who drank there. It's a "memoir", as they say, starting from a troubled childhood and ending in the present, where the confused young man has finally become successful, apparently more due to boozy mentors than anything else.
Part of my problem is that I'm not a drinker. Sure, I'll have a beer with my hamburger, but the idea of "stopping in for a few drinks" is foreign to me. Worse, I have known too many people with serious alcohol problems, so tales of drunken antics leave me cold.
But, as you can see from the Amazon reviews if you follow that link above, I'm way out in the woods on this one. Most people find this guy charming and brilliant. Oh well..
