Book Review 7/18/2007 Tony Lawrence
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin
I do read a lot of history books, and within that genre, the U.S. civil war has figured heavily. Books about Grant, Lee, the war itself, and of course more than one book on Lincoln. I wasn't sure I wanted to read yet another, but my sister (my perpetual gadfly for good reading) urged it upon me. I suppose it helped that I had heard and read positive reviews elsewhere, but my sister was the one who actually bought the book and pressed it into my slightly unwilling hands.
I'm glad she did. Goodwin approaches Lincoln by way of his cabinet (Stanton, Seward, Chase, Bates). I had certainly seen snippets about these men before; they were familiar actors on the stage of the Civil War. But I had never understood their political ambitions and backgrounds, and certainly never grasped the difficulty and genius of Lincoln in making them his cabinet.
Doris Kearns Goodwin writes well: there's little or nothing to bore you here. It's a great read, and is likely to give you new insight into Lincoln and the war that defined his presidency.
