Book Review 7/10/2007 Tony Lawrence
The Family That Couldn't Sleep by D.T. Max
This is the story of "Mad Cow Disease", its history, its origins and the efforts made to understand and treat both it and related diseases in humans and other animals.
There were a number of things I did not know before reading this book. For example, do you know why the Japanese are so afraid of contaminated beef? It's because, unlike Great Britain and the U.S., most of their population is at higher risk to actually contract the disease.
Do you know what the most dangerous cut of beef is? Apparently it's a T-Bone steak, because it's closest to the brain.
It's a fascinating story, and well told. One of the people responsible for a great deal of early research in this area was also a pedophile and ended up in jail for that. One Italian family has been passing down a "prion disease" for centuries - the disease can occur spontaneously also.
I enjoyed this and recommend it to those of you with a scientific or medical interest.
